How do I get started with my computer?

Tasks in Getting Started include: Transferring files from another computer Adding new users to your computer Backing up your files Personalizing Windows Click to open Getting Started. These topics will help you get started with Windows 7. You can also go to the Windows website to learn more about setting up a computer.  Protect your computer What is Action Center? How to Reset your Windows password

If you forget your password, you can reset it using a password reset disk for your user account (or the password reset information stored on a USB flash drive ). If you don't have a password reset disk, you'll need to get someone with an administrator account on the computer to reset your password for you. Note If an administrator resets your password, you might lose access to some of your files. For more information, see What are the risks of resetting a password? If you enter the wrong password when you attempt to log on, Windows displays a message that the password is incorrect. Click OK to close the message. Click Reset password, and then insert your password reset disk or USB flash drive. Follow the steps in the Password Reset wizard to create a new password. Log on with the new password. If you forget your password again, you can use the same password reset disk. You don't need to make a new one. For information about changing your passwor

What are the risks of resetting a password?

If you reset your password using a password reset disk, there are no risks. If you use an administrator account to reset a password for another user, that user will lose access to their encrypted files, encrypted e-mail messages, and stored passwords for websites or network resources. If the user doesn't have any of these things, or doesn't mind losing them, then using an administrator account to reset a password is a fast and easy way to recover from a forgotten password. Note Resetting a password is not the same as changing it. Changing your password doesn't pose any risk. For more information, see Change your Windows password. For more information about resetting a password, see Reset your Windows password.

Create a password reset disk

If you forget your Windows password, you can use a password reset disk to create a new one. We recommend that you create a password reset disk when you create your password, so you don't lose access to your files and information. To complete these steps, you'll need removable media (a USB flash drive or floppy disk). Insert your removable media. Click to open User Accounts. In the left pane, click Create a password reset disk, and then follow the instructions. Make sure you store the password reset disk in a safe place.

Change what happens when you press the power button on your computer

You can choose what happens when you press the power button on your computer case (or the edge of a laptop). The computer can shut down, sleep, hibernate, or do nothing. You can apply the same setting to all of your power plans or you can apply different settings to individual power plans.  To apply the same setting to all power plans Click to open Power Options. On the Select a power plan page, in the left pane, click Choose what the power buttons do. On the Define power buttons and turn on password protection page, next to When I press the power button, choose what you want your computer to do when you press the power button. If you have a laptop, you can choose separate settings for when your laptop is running on battery and when it's plugged in. Click Save changes.  To apply a setting to a specific power plan Click to open Power Options. On the Select a power plan page, click Change plan settings for the plan that you want to change. On the Change settings fo

Improve the appearance of text

Windows includes a technology called ClearType that is turned on by default. ClearType allows your monitor to display computer fonts as clear and smooth as possible. This can help make text easier to read over long periods of time without causing eyestrain. It works especially well with LCD devices, including flat-panel displays, laptops, and smaller handheld devices. It's a good idea to make sure ClearType was not turned off for some reason, especially if the text on your monitor looks fuzzy. You can also set up ClearType to work best with your particular monitor. For instructions on how to do both of these tasks, see Make text easier to read using ClearType.

Make text easier to read using ClearType

ClearType font technology makes the text on your screen almost as sharp and clear as text that is printed on paper. It's on by default in this version of Windows. To get the full benefit of ClearType, you'll need a high-quality, flat-panel monitor, such as LCD or plasma. Even on a CRT monitor, you might get some improvement in readability with ClearType. To turn on ClearType Click to open the ClearType Text Tuner. On the first page of the tuner, select the check box next to Turn on ClearType and click Next to continue using the ClearType Text Tuner. On the last screen of the tuner, click Finish to turn on ClearType and save your settings.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Note For ClearType to be effective, you should have a video card and monitor that support a color setting of at least 256 colors. You'll get the best results with High color (24-bit) or Highest color (32-bit) support.

To create a custom DPI scale

Windows gives you three preset choices (100%, 125%, or 150%) for making text, icons, and other items on your screen larger than normal size. This is the quickest and simplest way to change their size. But if you prefer, you can change their size to any number between 100% and 500% of normal size using the custom dots per inch (DPI) scale. Click to open Display. Click Set custom text size (DPI) in the left pane. Click the scale (ruler), drag the setting to whatever percentage size increase you want (100%-500%), and then click OK. (If you prefer, you can type a number between 100 and 500 in the box next to Scale to this percentage of normal size, and then click OK.) On the Display screen, click Apply. To see the change, close all of your programs and then log off of Windows. This change will take effect the next time you log on. Customize the size of the text that displays on your screen. Note If you set the DPI too high for your display, it can increase the size of some

To make text and on-screen items clearer in programs that aren't designed for high DPI

If you set the dots per inch (DPI) higher than 144 while you're running Aero (the premium visual experience of Windows), text and other items on the screen might appear blurry in some programs that aren't designed for high–DPI display in this version of Windows. You can avoid this issue by using Windows XP style DPI scaling for these programs. Some programs display better using Windows XP style DPI scaling. Click to open Display. Click Set custom text size (DPI) in the left pane. Select the Use Windows XP style DPI scaling check box, and then click OK. To see the change, close all of your programs and then log off of Windows. This change will take effect the next time you log on.

Back up your files

To help ensure that you don't lose your files, you should back them up regularly. You can set up automatic backups or manually back up your files at any time. Click to open Backup and Restore. Do one of the following: If you have never used Windows Backup before, click Set up backup, and then follow the steps in the wizard.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. If you have created a backup before, you can wait for your regularly scheduled backup to occur, or you can manually create a new backup by clicking Back up now.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Notes We recommend that you don't back up your files to the same hard disk that Windows is installed on. Always store media used for backups (external hard disks, DVDs, or CDs) in a secure place to prevent unauthorized people from having access to your files; we recomm

How does Windows choose which files to back up?

When you back up your files using Windows Backup, you can let Windows choose what is backed up or you can select the individual folders and drives that you want to back up. Depending on what you select, your backup will contain the items described in the following sections.  Let Windows choose If you let Windows choose what is backed up, the following items are included in your backup: Data files that are saved in libraries, on the desktop, and in default Windows folders for all people with a user account on the computer. Notes Only local files in libraries are included in the backup. If you have files in a library that are saved on a drive located on a different computer on a network, on the Internet, on the same drive that you are saving the backup on, or on a drive that is not formatted using the NTFS file system, they aren't included in the backup. Default Windows folders include AppData, Contacts, Desktop, Downloads, Favorites, Links, Saved Games, and Searches. If

What is a system image?

A system image is an exact copy of a drive. By default, a system image includes the drives required for Windows to run. It also includes Windows and your system settings, programs, and files. You can use a system image to restore the contents of your computer if your hard drive or computer ever stops working. When you restore your computer from a system image, it's a complete restoration; you can't choose individual items to restore, and all of your current programs, system settings, and files are replaced with the contents of the system image. Although this type of backup includes your personal files, we recommend that you back up your files regularly using Windows Backup so that you can restore individual files and folders as needed. When you set up Windows Backup, you can let Windows choose what to back up, which will include a system image, or you can select the items that you want to back up and whether you want to include a system image. For more information about sett

Back up your programs, system settings, and files

You can create a system image, which contains a copy of Windows and copies of your programs, system settings, and files. The system image is then stored in a separate location from the original programs, settings, and files. You can use this image to restore the contents of your computer if your hard disk or entire computer ever stops working. If you're using Windows Backup to back up your files, you can have a system image created each time your files are backed up. By default, this system image will only include the drives required for Windows to run. To include additional drives in the system image or to create a system image manually, follow the steps below. For information about system images, see What is a system image? Note To create a system image of a drive, it must be formatted to use the NTFS file system. The drive that you're saving the backup on must also be formatted to use the NTFS file system. For more information about NTFS, see Convert a hard disk or par

What backup settings should I use to maximize my disk space?

Windows Backup provides you with the flexibility of managing the disk space that is used by your backups. After you set up Windows Backup, you can view how much disk space is being used by the backup and how much free space you have on the disk that your backups are being saved on by going to the Backup and Restore Control Panel. To control how much disk space is being used, you can choose how many file backups and how many system images Windows keeps. The following information can help you when deciding how best to manage your backup disk space: Backups are created in sets known as backup periods. To help maximize your disk space, Windows Backup backs up all selected folders the first time it's run and then it only backs up files that are new or have been modified since the last backup was made. Periodically, Windows creates a new, full backup. Each full backup is known as a backup period. When you view your file backups, you see all of the backup periods labeled with date

Why use a standard user account instead of an administrator account?

The standard account can help protect your computer by preventing users from making changes that affect everyone who uses the computer, such as deleting files that are required for the computer to work. We recommend creating a standard account for each user. When you are logged on to Windows with a standard account, you can do almost anything that you can do with an administrator account, but if you want to do something that affects other users of the computer, such as installing software or changing security settings, Windows might ask you to provide a password for an administrator account.

What is Action Center?

Action Center is a central place to view alerts and take actions that can help keep Windows running smoothly. Action Center notifies you when items need your attention Action Center lists important messages about security and maintenance settings that need your attention. Red items in Action Center are labeled Important, and indicate significant issues that should be addressed soon, such as an outdated antivirus program that needs updating. Yellow items are suggested tasks that you should consider addressing, like recommended maintenance tasks. Click to open Action Center. To view details about either the Security or Maintenance section, click the heading or the arrow next to the heading to expand or collapse the section. If you don’t want to see certain types of messages, you can choose to hide them from view. Get a quick summary of your computer's status You can quickly see whether there are any new messages in Action Center by placing your mouse over the Action Cent

Why won't Windows allow me to change a system setting?

If your computer is part of a network at an organization such as a school, government agency, or business, your organization's system administrator might have disabled or even removed certain settings by using Group Policy. Group Policy is a feature of Windows that lets system administrators manage users' access to Windows features. If you suspect that Group Policy is preventing you from changing a setting that you need to access, contact your system administrator. If your computer isn't part of a network, a user with administrator privileges might have modified Group Policy on your computer to remove access to the settings. In this case, contact the administrator to modify the settings you'd like to change. For more in-depth technical information about Group Policy, go to the Microsoft website for IT professionals.

Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your devices

In this articleDrivers and information To have Windows automatically download recommended drivers and icons To turn on and configure Windows Update To install drivers and other optional updates from Windows Update If Windows can't find a driver for your device If Windows can’t find information about your device in Device Stage You can have Windows automatically download recommended drivers and detailed information for your devices. This is a good way to make sure all your hardware works properly. Drivers and information Windows can find and download two kinds of updates for devices connected to your computer: Drivers A driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with hardware devices. Without drivers, the devices you connect to your computer—for example, a mouse or external hard drive—won't work properly. Windows can automatically check if there are drivers available for new devices that you connect to your computer. For hardware that you've

To install drivers and other optional updates from Windows Update

Even if you have Windows Update set to automatically download and install all important and recommended updates, you still might not be getting all of the updated drivers available for your devices. For instance, optional updates might include updated drivers that become available for hardware or devices you've already installed. Windows doesn't automatically download and install optional updates, but you will be notified when optional updates are available. To get all the available updates for your devices, periodically check Windows Update for all available updates, including optional updates. You can review the available updates and then select them from the list of updates that Windows finds for your computer. Here's how to do this: Click to open Windows Update. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer. If there are any available updates, click the link in the box under Windows Update

If Windows can't find a driver for your device

It's best to let Windows install drivers automatically. Occasionally, Windows might not be able to find a driver for your device. If this happens, you might want to check the manufacturer's website for a driver or update for the device, or try installing any software that came with the device.

What to do when a device isn't installed properly

In this articleMake sure your computer is connected to the Internet and automatic updating is turned on Manually check for drivers on Windows Update Install software for the device When you connect a new device to your computer, Windows automatically tries to install it for you and will notify you if a driver for the device can't be found. There are several things you can try if this happens: Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet and automatic updating is turned on Your computer must be connected to the Internet for Windows to be able to search online for a device driver. To see if your computer is connected to the Internet, open your web browser and try accessing a website. If you're temporarily disconnected, such as when you're traveling with a laptop, wait until you're online again, and then try reinstalling your device. Windows can't check for the latest drivers unless automatic updating is turned on. Most people turn on automatic updati
